The shady tree canopy surrounding Nata Lodge is a hive of activity, with a bird feeding area and active water feature providing the bird watcher with the opportunity of viewing a variety of species from the comfort of the pool deck, open bar and restaurant.  The Helmeted Guineafowl, Crested Francolin, Yellow Hornbill, Pied and Arrowmarked Babblers, Glossy Starling, Meyers Parrot and Paradise Whydah are just some of the species that can be seen at Nata Lodge.

When the sun sets and the birds take leave to their nests, bouncing through the trees like miniature kangaroos & propelled by overdeveloped hindlegs, a family of nocturnal bush babies make their appearance to entertain you at their feeding table.

·         Nata Lodge - sunset at the pan shorelineNata Sanctuary:  For an unforgettable experience, particularly for keen bird watchers and naturalists, or even those who just enjoy wide open spaces, Nata Lodge offers open vehicle, three hour excursions into the Nata Sanctuary.  Nata Sanctuary is famous for its abundant water birds, which congregate here from all around Africa after the flooding of the pan.  Around 165 bird species, including king-fishers, eagles, ostriches, pelicans, spoonbills and both greater and lesser flamingos, have been recorded. The pan forms the breeding ground for a host of these water birds including pelicans and flamingo in their thousands, transforming the shore line into a pink haze. Antelope such as kudu and springbok, as well as springhares, jackals, foxes and monkeys can also be seen at Nata Sanctuary.

·         Quad Bikes are a thrilling way to get the wind in your hair and to explore the dusty plains and grasslands surrounding the Lodge. Our guides will take you on a exhilarating ride!

MAKGADIGADI SALT PANS

Nata Sanctuary

The Makgadikgadi Pans, as we know it today, is a relic of what used to be a massive inland lake, one of the biggest in Africa – Lake Makgadikgadi.  The Makgadikgadi Pans consist of two main pans, Sowa Pan and Ntwetwe Pan and around them a multitude of smaller salt pans and vast grassy plains dotted by palm islands. The Great Makgadikgadi comprises the largest area of salt pans in the world covering some 37 000 sq km in overall extent.  An atmosphere of antiquity and mystery is felt in this incredible place.

AFRICA MEMORIES TIP

If you are a lover of sunsets, this is the time to get your camera ready.  The most awesome sunsets can be captured, whilst enjoying sundowners and listening to the dwindling jabbering of birds as the sun goes down, at Nata Bird Sanctuary.  There is also an elevated hide there with incredible views of the pan.  Choose your spot and wait for the sunset, particularly if there are storm clouds present. Capture the moment, capture the memory.
