MAKGADIGADI
SALT PANS
The
Makgadikgadi Pans, as we know it today, is a relic of what used to be
a massive inland lake, one of the biggest in Africa – Lake
Makgadikgadi. The
Makgadikgadi Pans consist of two main pans, Sowa Pan and Ntwetwe Pan
and around them a multitude of smaller salt pans and vast grassy
plains dotted by palm islands. The Great Makgadikgadi comprises the
largest area of salt pans in the world covering some 37 000 sq km in
overall extent. An
atmosphere of antiquity and mystery is felt in this incredible place. AFRICA
MEMORIES TIP If you are a lover of sunsets, this is the time to get your camera ready. The most awesome sunsets can be captured, whilst enjoying sundowners and listening to the dwindling jabbering of birds as the sun goes down, at Nata Bird Sanctuary. There is also an elevated hide there with incredible views of the pan. Choose your spot and wait for the sunset, particularly if there are storm clouds present. Capture the moment, capture the memory.
